One of the reasons people get so 'uppity' about what they call 'cults' is because of this authority issue. They see it as one person's illegitimate influence over others. Orage said that 'half the people who met Gurdjieff thought he was a saint and the other half thought he was a charlatan'. But those that saw him as a charlatan didn't see that the people that took him as an authority took him that 'way' relative to what they felt was true and in their own best interest.
